On Friday, June 16, the farewell party of our outgoing chairman of the Friends of Clem Venne Foundation took place. The venue was the Urbanuskerk in Bovenkerk, for which Clem has devoted himself in every possible way since he took office thirteen years ago.

Hans Zandvliet, the new president of our foundation, opened the event and immediately passed the floor to Mayor Tjapko Poppens of Amstelveen, who had taken office just after the fatal fire (Sept. 15, 2018). After many words of praise for all that has been accomplished - in part due to Clem - in the restoration of the church, the mayor presented Clem with a platter depicting the skyline of Amstelveen. Of course with the Urbanus Church on it as the eye-catcher.

Pastor Eugène Jongerden, then pinned the departing Clem with the papal decoration Pro Ecclesia et Pontifici for services rendered to the R.C. Church. As a surprise for Clem, several restored Stations of the Cross had been hung in the church. Due to the decreased humidity in the building of God, this was now possible.

Jack de Bie then played three beautiful musical works (Beethoven and Rachmaninov) on our own restored grand piano.

Edwin and Chris, the "chocolate gentlemen," could not be left behind. The former chairman was reminded how often he had been put on the spot by the aforementioned two with spontaneous, ready-made recruitment plans. Finally, the new chairman offered Clem and wife Karin a gift related to water sports on behalf of the Foundation, which also ended the official part of the meeting. It was time for the many attendees to reminisce over a drink.

We may speak of a successful farewell.
