The municipality of Amstelveen is once again offering residents the opportunity to borrow an e-bike or e-cargo bike for free for two weeks for their commute to work. Through the e-bike trial program, residents can experience how appealing cycling can be for daily trips to work. Those interested can sign up starting now at amstelveen.nl/fietsprobeeractie. The first loan period begins in early September.

Starting in late October 2026, Exit 5 (Stadshart Amstelveen) on the south side will be closed for an extended period. As a result, increased traffic is expected on the surrounding road network. However, many residents live within biking distance of their jobs in Amstelveen, Amsterdam, Schiphol, or surrounding municipalities. For them, an e-bike can be an attractive alternative to driving.

Getting to Know the E-Bike

To raise awareness of the campaign, Councilwoman Floor Gordon (Mobility) visited Nicooz in Westwijk—one of the participating bike shops—on August 20. She learned about the benefits of e-bikes for commuting. Councilwoman Floor Gordon (Mobility): “With the construction work on the A9, we’re working to make Amstelveen more accessible. During this period, when road closures and detours are unavoidable, we’d like to introduce residents to the e-bike as a comfortable and practical alternative to the car. For many commutes, the e-bike is a fast and relaxed way to travel. With this campaign, residents can experience for themselves whether it works for them too.”

Distribution Points and Campaign

The e-bike trial program is organized by the mobility organizations De Boom and Het Meer. Participants can use an e-bike free of charge for two weeks for their commute. The bikes are equipped with pedal assistance up to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. Participating in the campaign are Van Nieuwkerk Scooter XL, Undefined e-bike Amstelveen Experience Center, Nicooz Tweewielers, De Haan Wielersport, and the Kids Actief Roda23 daycare center (e-cargo bike).
