The Paulus Choir, conducted for the last time by Marcel Joosen, will perform “Die Schöpfung” on October 31 at the Urbanuskerk in Amstelveen Bovenkerk.

Haydn’s *The Creation* tells the biblical story of the creation of heaven and earth. The three vocal soloists represent the three archangels, who narrate and comment on the first six days of creation in the first two movements: Gabriel (soprano), Uriel (tenor), and Raphael (bass). 

In the third part, Adam and Eve sing of their happiness in paradise. The role of Adam is sung by the same soloist who plays Raphael, and the role of Eve by the same soloist who plays Gabriel. The choir sings a series of monumental choral works, each celebrating the completion of a day of creation. 

In this work, Haydn paints, as it were, with music.
Birdsong, roaring lions, wriggling worms, and the majestic rising of the sun are all given their own musical form. Perhaps the most famous moment is the beginning of the oratorio. After a dark, mysterious opening that depicts the chaos before creation, the choir suddenly sings: “Es ward Licht” – “There was Light.” On the word “Light,” the entire orchestra and choir burst forth in a radiant C major chord, an impressive musical moment.
