For several months now, Amstelveen's young people have been living in the flex housing at the Kalkbranderij. The 97 houses are much needed to reduce the long waiting times for house seekers in Amstelveen. Residents and others involved celebrated the completion with a cozy and sunny barbecue.

The construction time of the project took about nine months. Way faster than other construction projects. The biggest advantage is that most of the homes were built in the factory.

Housing for Amstelveen youth

'As a college of B and W, we want there to be housing for every target group in Amstelveen. It is very nice that these 61 homes for the youth target group are now in use. Where possible, the municipality gives residents of Amstelveen priority on social housing and in new construction projects to the maximum. This has enabled a number of Amstelveen's young people to get housing. For them it's a great start to a housing career,' says alderman for housing Adam Elzakalai.

Good cooperation

'The cooperation with the municipality and developer Moos was very good,' says Eigen Haard director Arco Groothedde. 'That applies to the realization of the homes and to the housing and supervision of the 36 Ukrainian refugees who have been living here temporarily since December. With the municipality, we have been able to accommodate them well. And with that, these residents can pick up their lives quickly.'

A vision of smart and sustainable building

The designer and builder of the relocatable homes, Moos, sees their vision of modular and circular housing becoming a reality in the Lime Burner project. It brings their mission - to responsibly solve the housing shortage - one step closer. "This project shows that with smart, repeatable building solutions and good collaboration, we can really set the pace," says Rosa Hoogma, co-founder of Moos. "Not only are we building fast, but we are also building responsibly, both socially and in terms of materials use. The homes meet Paris Proof standards and thus meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. This means reducing the energy use of the built environment by two-thirds and keeping the building within the carbon budget."
