Parkinsoncafé Amsterdam took the lead with this theme. We received requests from various quarters asking if we could also feature Frank Schopman’s story at our café. Frank has Parkinson’s himself; he was a teacher during his career, and he will be speaking to us about driving and Parkinson’s. Two questions are central to this discussion:

  1. What should you do if you're diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and you have a driver's license?
  2. What should you do if your driver's license is about to expire and you've had Parkinson's for several years?

Questions that will be addressed include:

  • How does Parkinson's disease affect driving?
  • What about insurance?
  • How do you apply for a driver's license renewal?
  • What do a neurologist and a medical examiner do, and what is a medical certificate?
  • What does a driving test involve, and who administers it?
  • What does the CBR (Central Bureau for Driving Proficiency) look for?
  • What about taking medication while driving?
  • What role does a caregiver play when it comes to driving?
  • What alternatives are there to driving?

Has Frank published his autobiography about living with Parkinson's? Frank will take us on that journey.
